Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric sleeve patients typically lose 60% – 75% of excess body weight in under two years.

The Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure. It generates weight loss by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten without any bypass of the intestines to result in malabsorption of food because a portion of the stomach remains intact.

Advantages

  • The stomach is reduced in volume but continues to function in a way close to normal.
  • Eliminates the portion of the stomach (Fundus) that produces the hormones that stimulate hunger.
  • There is no dumping syndrome because the pylorus (the part of the stomach that connects with the duodenum) is preserved.
  • No anastomosis (connection between the stomach and the small bowel) which minimizes the chance of an ulcer occurring.
  • For patients who do not wish to have a gastric bypass or their indications do not meet the gastric bypass.
  • Procedure does not re-route the intestines = no malabsorption
  • No foreign objects are implanted, as with the Lap Band.
  • Better weight loss than the Lap Band.
  • For those that need chronic long term nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) sleeve gastrectomy is preferred over the gastric bypass, as there is a lower risk of an ulcer.
  • Many patients experience a loss of up to 50-70 % excess body weight
  • Procedure is performed minimally invasive (small incisions)
  • Often covered by insurance
  • Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and other obesity-related conditions have shown high reduction or cure rates after the sleeve gastrectomy

Disadvantages

  1. This is the only truly non-reversible bariatric surgery, as a portion of the stomach is actually removed from your body. (The gastric bypass is technically reversible, although reversing it comes with many risks.)
  2. Weight loss may not be as good as a gastric bypass.
  3. Long term data does not exist with the Sleeve, as it does with other bariatric surgeries.
  4. There is a slightly higher risk of a leak following a Sleeve gastrectomy than with a gastric bypass.

Gastric Sleeve Cost

If your medical insurance covers bariatric surgery, then gastric sleeve should be included in your benefits.

We recommend inquiring about your benefits by speaking to your healthcare agent about any copays or deductibles you will be responsible for if approved. Many insurance policies require you to show you have made an effort to lose weight through non-surgical means prior to approving bariatric surgery. It’s important to understand that this is a process that can take time; patience and our dedicated knowledgeable team will help you get through this experience at each stage.
